Late in the Civil War, three Confederate soldiers escape from a Union prison camp in Missouri. They soon fall into the hands of pro-Confederate raiders, who force them to act as “outriders” (escorts) for a civilian wagon train that will be secretly transporting Union gold from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to St. Louis, Missouri.

The Virginian starring another great movie cowhand, Joel McCrea. Also with Brian Donlevy, Sonny Tufts, and Barbara Britton.

The Virginian is a ranch hand at the Sunk Creek Ranch, located outside of Medicine Bow, Wyoming. He is described as a tall, dark, slim young giant, with a deep personality. His real name is never given. At first, he is only a worker, but halfway through the book, he is signed on as the full-time foreman. He is the Judge’s most trusted worker. Several times throughout the book, he is offered the chance to run down his enemy, Trampas, behind his back, but each time he refuses the temptation. Arriving at Medicine Bow, eastern schoolteacher Molly Woods meets two cowboys, irresponsible Steve and the “Virginian,” who gets off on the wrong foot with her.

Joel McCrea and Shelly Winters star in what some consider a re-make of the Jimmy Stewart movie, Destry Rides Again. I don’t think it’s an exact re-make but it does have plenty of common elements. Overall. it’s a solid, entertaining Western. Saw this movie for the 1st time a few years ago on the Western channel and I couldn’t get over the costumes. I think this movie has the most beautiful costumes for a western movie. Not to mention the knockout figure Shelly Winters had. And it’s a great mystery too. What a movie.

When his friend is killed in a riding accident Chuck realises he must now take care of the family. They take to the road and he gets a job on a ranch, but he has to keep the children hidden as his new boss is not keen on children. There’s also a fair amount of tension with the neighbouring ranch, and when a girl on the run from her evil uncle joins the family unannounced Chuck wonders how he will cope with all this new responsibility.
